The source of power supply in Semey is hydroelectric power plants. The energy generated by HPPs is classified as a renewable energy source.

The university has adopted a Zero Carbon Emissions Policy (https://semgu.kz/en/pages/index?pathway=universite...). Scientific research is carried out within the framework of this Policy (https://semgu.kz/en/science/projects-list?pathway=...) and introduced innovative disciplines in the educational programs Heat Power Engineering, Technical Physics, Construction. It is planned to conduct energy audit to improve energy efficiency of buildings.

The university students implemented projects “Smart lighting”, “Solar gazebo for charging gadgets” within the framework of the program “Sustainability living lab: outreach” (Office of Sustainable Development together with the corporate foundation “National conservation initiative” with the support of Chevron company).
